Blueberries, Technical Mastery: Physiology & Production Systems

Blueberry cultivation has been rapidly expanding in Morocco since 2008. Given the technical demands of this delicate crop, particularly in soilless systems, Green Smile is organizing a high-level training to support producers in optimizing their performance. Led by Bernardine Strike and Mariusz Podewski, international experts, this training covers blueberry physiology, production systems, irrigation, nutrition, and climate management.

Objective

Achieve a high level of performance in blueberry cultivation, both in soil and soilless systems.

Program

  • Blueberry production – introduction/types/adaptation
  • Physiology I (roots and shoots: morphology & growth)
  • Physiology II (photosynthesis; transpiration; resource movement)
  • Physiology III (flower bud development; fruit set; berry development stages)
  • Blueberry nutrient requirements I – research-based information
  • Nutrients II – research-based information
  • Blueberry nutrition in substrate (pH; EC; CEC; cations/anions; measurement)
  • Production systems (harvesting; trellising; pruning)
  • Physiological issues (heat; sun; stress)
  • Irrigation and plant water use (plant needs; moisture measurement; temperature and relative humidity effects)
  • Pest issues (management of important diseases and insects)
  • Field visit

Padewski Mariusz

Involved for more than 14 years in berry cultivation in Europe. At the beginning, and for 6 years, in the south of England, he managed blueberry, strawberry, and blackberry crops on various substrates. For more than 6 years, he has been a consultant with the Dutch company Delphy, where he worked for three years in the United Kingdom, then in Poland and Eastern Europe, as well as in the eastern regions of the Mediterranean.

He advises blueberry growers on substrate plant management, interprets laboratory test results, and provides the necessary adjustments to fertigation and fertilization. His main focus is on plant management, based on physiology, to achieve high-quality fruit.
