The blueberry, citrus, and avocado seasons in Peru are at a turning point.

Blueberries are now an elite product; market windows will be decisive

Limited fruit availability, climatic effects, and intensifying global competition are reshaping prices, markets, and strategies. At the same time, Peruvian exporters are seeking to capitalize on new opportunities in Asia, India, and the United States, diversifying destinations and adapting their plans to an increasingly demanding environment.

Wilmer Jaime Peña, Commercial Director of Megui Investment, explains that the company is preparing to enter the blueberry market with experimental air shipments. The company, which already exports Hass avocados mainly to Shanghai and citrus fruits — Valencia oranges, Murcott mandarins, and limes — to the United States, has built its strategy around identifying the most profitable market windows. In the case of avocados, prices have followed a distinctly seasonal pattern. “Between December and March, the market window is very attractive; then, when the major exporters enter the scene, prices drop. But from late August to November, another opportunity emerges, though with higher risks due to dry matter levels.” During this second phase, global prices have risen by about 30% as a result of lower supply.

Regarding market diversification, MEGUI is committed to strengthening its presence in China, the United States, and Europe, while also exploring opportunities in India, where blueberry consumption is growing rapidly. “India is showing a strong appetite for blueberries, and we see a very open and receptive market there.”

Beyond prices and logistics, selecting the right customers remains one of the greatest challenges. “There are many buyers, but few reliable payers. In this perishable goods sector, finding the right partner is crucial,” he concludes.
