Moroccan tomato exports to Germany increased from 12,710 tonnes in 2005 to 74,890 tonnes in 2024, representing a rise of 489%.
A sharply increasing market share
Driven by this growth, Morocco’s share of German tomato imports reached nearly 10% in 2024, compared to less than 2% twenty years ago.
Strong growth in export value
In value terms, Moroccan tomato exports to Germany rose from €14.56 million in 2005 to €157.99 million in 2024. Converted into US dollars based on average exchange rates, this corresponds to an increase from approximately USD 16 million to USD 172 million. This trend reflects both higher shipment volumes and an increase in average unit value.
In 2024, the average price of Moroccan tomatoes delivered to Germany reached €2.11/kg, or approximately USD 2.30/kg.
Still behind market leaders
Despite this strong momentum, Morocco remains behind the leading suppliers to the German market. The Netherlands continues to rank first, with 360,200 tonnes delivered in 2024, accounting for 47.93% of German imports. Spain follows in second place with 216,180 tonnes, representing 28.77% of the market.
Growth and pricing strengthen Morocco’s position
While Northern European producers continue to dominate German tomato imports in terms of volume, the data shows that Morocco has steadily strengthened its position over time through sustained export growth and a relatively higher average price level.
