Swiss Appetite for Moroccan Avocados Reaches New Heights

Moroccan avocado exports to Switzerland reached an all-time high during the 2024/2025 season, propelling Morocco to second place among the country’s top suppliers.

Swiss Appetite for Moroccan Avocados Reaches New Heights

According to data published by EastFruit, early forecasts had already pointed to strong growth — but the final results far exceeded expectations. Between July 2024 and June 2025, Morocco exported 3,800 tonnes of avocados to Switzerland, worth a total of $12.2 million. This represents a 170% increase compared to the previous season (2023/2024) and a fourfold rise since 2021/2022. This record volume marks a national milestone: it is also the first time Moroccan avocado exports to Switzerland have exceeded $10 million in value.

A Rapidly Strengthening Trade Relationship

Switzerland is not a new market for Moroccan avocados — the first official shipment dates back to 2003/2004, with barely 704 kilograms exported. The 100-tonne threshold was crossed in 2011/2012, followed by 500 tonnes in 2019/2020. But the 2024/2025 season stands out as a true turning point, with a historic quantitative leap. Switzerland now accounts for 1.4% of Morocco’s total avocado exports — a record level, as this share had never previously exceeded 1%. The country is now regarded as one of the most promising markets for Moroccan producers.

Rising Demand in the Swiss Market

Over the past two seasons, Moroccan avocado exports to Switzerland have taken place mainly between September and May, with peak volumes in November and February. In February 2025, Morocco alone shipped 862 tonnes of avocados, representing nearly 40% of the Swiss market share that month.

Swiss demand continues to rise: the country imported 24,300 tonnes of avocados in 2024/2025, an increase of 14% year-on-year and 29% compared to 2021/2022.

Peru remains Switzerland’s leading supplier, covering over 40% of imports, followed by Spain, Israel, and Chile. Until now, Morocco had never ranked higher than fifth.

Morocco: An Emerging Leader in the European Market

This year’s spectacular surge in export volumes has allowed Morocco to surpass several major competitors and secure second place in the rankings. Moroccan avocados now account for more than 15% of total Swiss imports, confirming the country’s rising influence on the international stage. At the same time, Morocco continues to diversify its export destinations. In 2024/2025, it also exported over 1,000 tonnes of avocados to Canada, strengthening its presence in high-value premium markets.

Recognition of Moroccan Expertise

These achievements underscore Morocco’s strategic role as a key player in the global avocado industry. Thanks to product quality, logistics expertise, and a strong ability to adapt to international market requirements, Morocco is reinforcing its reputation as a reliable and sustainable supplier, capable of meeting the growing global demand for healthy and responsibly produced fruit.
