Finland: Moroccan Tomato Exports Reach Record Levels

According to EastFruit, Moroccan direct tomato exports to Finland increased significantly during the 2025/2026 season.

Between July 2025 and February 2026, Finland imported approximately 2,200 tons of Moroccan tomatoes, valued at nearly EUR 6 million. This represents a doubling compared to the previous season and sets a new all-time record.

Continuous growth over the past two decades

Moroccan tomato exports to Finland have steadily increased since the early 2000s. After surpassing the 1,000-ton mark in 2022/2023, export volumes exceeded 2,000 tons for the first time during the current campaign.

A market highly dependent on winter imports

Finland remains largely self-sufficient in tomatoes during the summer months but relies heavily on imports throughout winter. The Netherlands and Spain traditionally dominate the market, together accounting for between 75% and 80% of imported volumes.

Morocco gains ground through direct shipments

Historically, a large share of Moroccan tomatoes transited through France before being redistributed to Nordic markets. Today, Moroccan exporters are increasingly opting for direct shipments, reducing their dependence on intermediary logistics hubs.

After expanding direct sales to Denmark and Norway, Morocco is now accelerating its presence on the Finnish market.

A structural shift in European trade flows

This growth reflects a broader transformation in European trade flows. Volumes that were previously recorded as French imports are now increasingly appearing directly in trade statistics as Moroccan exports, strengthening Morocco’s visibility as a direct supplier on European markets.
