Avocados: Moroccan output declines sharply after climate-driven season

According to industry estimates, exports exceeded 50,000 tons, while total production remained below 70,000 tons, representing a drop of around 50% compared to the previous season.

A particularly challenging season for growers

According to Abdellah El Yamlaahi, President of the Moroccan Avocado Association, the 2025–2026 season was “extremely difficult.” Lower yields and reduced export volumes contrast sharply with the strong performance recorded in the previous campaign.

Adverse weather conditions impact yields

The decline is largely attributed to unfavorable weather conditions, particularly the hot and dry Chergui winds during the summer, which affected orchard performance and reduced productivity.

Strong competition on European markets

Moroccan avocados also faced increased competition in European markets from suppliers such as Israel, the Dominican Republic, Chile, Peru and Spain. However, competitive pressure eased toward the end of the season.

Logistical disruptions during winter

Export operations were further affected by logistical challenges, including temporary closures at Tangier Med Port due to winter weather conditions, causing delays in shipments to European markets.

Outlook depends on the next production cycle

Producers are now focusing on the upcoming season, with orchards currently in the flowering stage. Future production levels will largely depend on climatic conditions in the coming months.

A growing sector despite short-term setbacks

Despite this temporary decline, avocado cultivation continues to expand in Morocco, particularly in the regions of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima and Rabat-Salé-Kenitra, supported by ongoing investment. The sector also emphasizes that water use remains comparable to other crops grown in areas without severe water constraints.
