Avocados: African Producers Strengthen Their Position in Global Markets

South Africa remains the continent’s leading exporter

While domestic consumption remains significant in many markets, exports are becoming an increasingly important driver of growth. South Africa remains the continent’s largest avocado exporter and expects to ship around 21 million cartons during the 2026 season. Local consumption is also growing rapidly, with domestic sales expected to reach nearly twice the export volume.

Kenya consolidates its position as a leading exporter

Kenya has established itself as Africa’s second-largest avocado exporter, shipping more than 80,000 tonnes annually. The sector benefits from strong international demand and favorable growing conditions, with Europe and the Middle East remaining its main export destinations.

The industry also plays a key role in supporting smallholder farmers, making avocados one of Kenya’s most valuable horticultural export crops.

Tanzania records rapid growth

Tanzania is expected to produce around 235,000 tonnes of avocados in 2026, with exports projected at 40,000 tonnes. Europe remains its largest market, accounting for around 40% of shipments, while India has become an increasingly important destination, representing approximately 30% of exports.

The country has strengthened its position in India thanks to an early marketing window and continued investment in production, which has grown by an average of 20% annually over the past five years.

Zimbabwe and Mozambique continue to expand

Zimbabwe’s avocado industry is also growing rapidly, with exports expected to exceed 6,000 tonnes in 2026, positioning the country among Africa’s leading producers.

Mozambique, where commercial avocado production began only in 2015, continues to develop its industry with varieties such as Hass, Fuerte, Gwen and Pinkerton. The country exported its first avocados in 2018 and is benefiting from investment and technical expertise, including partnerships with South African producers.

Africa’s avocado industry gains momentum

The continued expansion of production across the continent highlights Africa’s growing importance in the global avocado market. While South Africa and Kenya remain the dominant exporters, countries such as Tanzania, Zimbabwe and Mozambique are steadily strengthening their presence, supported by increasing production, expanding export markets and long-term investment in the sector.
